Q: I opened my PNG file and all I can see is a tag! Where is the adornment?
A: Some of our adornments are white or semi-transparent. The artwork is still there, you just need to use your box/marquee selection tool and select the entire area below the tag. Then copy and paste it into your layout file.
Tech Talk
Q: What is a PNG?
A: A PNG is a file very similar to a JPEG, but the image is higher quality. PNGs preserve also preserve transparency and can be opened in most graphics editing programs.
Q: I'm new to this digital thing, what are my options when it comes to programs?
A: There are many graphics editing programs available to digi-scrappers of all levels. The most commonly used right now is Adobe Photoshop Elelments. The newest version is about $140, but if you're on a really tight budget you can get version 6 for a little less. Corel Painter, Photoshop CS3, and Corel Draw are some other options. A completely free program available for download is Gimp, to be found at www.gimp.org. (Tutorials and instructions offered by Adornitdigital.com are for Photoshop Professional and Photoshop Elements)
With digi-scrappin' on the up and up there are more options becoming available all the time. The most important thing to do before you invest in a graphics editing program is: do your homework! Make sure you know what type of computer you have and what sort of software it can handle. Then ask yourself "What level of digi-scrapper do I want to be?" For beginners, go with Photoshop Elements or Gimp. If you are fascinated with techniques and want every available tool to express your artistic side go with a higher-level version of Photoshop or a similar product.
Q: What is a graphics tablet and of what benifit is it to me?
A: What it is: A graphics tablet is a piece of hardware (something you plug into your computer) that helps you feel like you are really drawing or painting. The most common brand right now is WACOM, and they offer several different sizes.
Benifits/Pros: Graphics tablets are far more expressive for the artistic at heart. They simulate brush pressure and can do some really neat things. Health-wise they are better for you than a mouse. Using a mouse regularly for long periods of time can lead to carpal tunnel. Graphics tablets are more ergonomic. A graphics tablet pen makes you use different muscles and does not cause such problems.
Cons: Cost. Graphics tablets are notoriously expensive. Beginning with the smallest model they range from $80 to the impressive Centiq (basically a screen you draw directly on) at $2,000.
If I'm going to buy one, what do I need to know?: 1) Make sure your computer is compatible. 2) Get the size that is right for you. The smallest are more affordable, but something the size of a regular piece of letterhead paper is what Adornit designers recommend.
How long does one typically last?: It should last as long as your computer does (or longer) as long as you don't drop it or spill something on it.
